There are individuals you meet in your profession who quietly (or not so quietly) recalibrate your understanding of management. For me, Donald Miller is one among them.
Don’t let the best-selling-author/speaker/entrepreneur résumé idiot you – his biggest expertise isn’t simply storytelling. It’s self-awareness. It’s humility. And it’s the flexibility to develop with out dropping the thread of who he’s.
That’s why I really like going to writer retreats with him (or wherever for that matter). I’ve discovered a lot from watching how he leads, and why I’m thrilled to carry his story to episode three of Changing into Self Made.
Don didn’t begin out wanting to construct a powerhouse firm like StoryBrand. He needed to put in writing one good ebook. Perhaps two. That’s it. However life had different plans, and never all the time fairly ones. His first ebook underperformed. He made a foul funding and misplaced his complete life financial savings. He hit partitions that might’ve taken most individuals out.
However right here’s what Don did in another way:
He let failure crush his ego, not his ambition.
As a substitute of spiraling into “I’m not lower out for this,” he requested higher questions:
What did this failure train me about my assumptions? My expertise? My blind spots?
Don handled failure like knowledge; helpful, unemotional, and extremely clarifying. Each misstep gave him route. Each setback helped him refine the sort of creator, entrepreneur, and chief he needed to turn out to be.
As Don grew, he discovered that progress all the time has a worth.
Time. Power. Relationships. Beliefs you swore had been “the way in which.”
Week 3 of our pilot sequence of Changing into Self Made is all about scaling, and Don nails the message:
You’re by no means “executed.”
Actual progress requires:
- trusting your group greater than your individual control-freak tendencies,
- hiring people who find themselves self-directed since you know you aren’t a micromanager,
- staying interested by your limitations as a substitute of pretending they’re strengths,
- and adapting your online business mannequin when the world shifts round you.
When AI began altering the advertising panorama, Don didn’t stiff-arm it. He modified StoryBrand’s complete service mannequin to leverage it. That’s management over consolation. That’s progress over concern.
And it results in a very powerful query Don poses on this episode:
Who’s serving to you develop… and who’s holding you again?
As a result of scaling isn’t about greater.
It’s about turning into braver. Clearer.
Extra sincere about the way in which you’re employed, and the way in which you don’t.
This episode is a masterclass in humility and evolution from somebody who’s nonetheless within the enviornment, doing the work, and asking the proper questions.
For those who’re a founder, entrepreneur, or builder of any sort, do not miss this story.
